TRENCH LINE

EXCERPT FROM THE FLIGHT LOG OF RECONNAISSANCE AND BOMBER FLIGHT

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

2nd of September 1941

- Reconnaissance flight: 2.9.1941. Time: 05:00 - 06:20.

- Observations: There is coming a light signal from the mid part of the island of Osmussaar at 05:35. The sea in the line of Porkkala - Tallinn - Hiiumaa Shallows - Hanko is empty from shops. Also the area between Hiiumaa and the mainland as well as the northern tip of Saaremaa is empty from ships. The Hanko Harbour seems empty.

- Some field fortifications have been built next to the structure 223. These are mostly trenches and some firing positions.

Trench line, Picture 2

- One of the firing positions.

Trench line, Picture 3

- The positions have been built on top of a hill. The view from the positions has been good towards the frontline.

Trench line, Picture 4

- At least one rusted metal object lies on the ground.

Trench line, Picture 5

- This is not an ammunition, but more likely some kind of a container.

Trench line, Picture 6

- The trenches are still nicely visible on top of the hill.
