MORGONLANDET

|
- The island of Morgonlandet is located in the middle of the sea. The
distance from Hanko, which is located in north-east, is about 16 kilometers.
The lighthouse island of Bengtskär is located in south-west. The distance
between Morgonlandet and Bengtskär is about 12 kilometers. During a good
weather the lighthouse is visible from Morgonlandet. The Fort of Örö, which
was the closest place, from where the observation team of Morgonlandet could
have received help, is located in north-west. The distance to Fort of Örö
from Morgonlandet is about 22 kilometers.
- The vegetation in Morgonlandet is very scarce. The heathers occupy most of the rocky island and only on the east side of the island there is a small grove. From this grove one can find the pond, which now is nearly overgrown and dried. In this pond the Lieutenant Ahlblad had his men tried to hide from the Russian troops, which landed to the island during the night of 16.07.1941. - When visiting the island, one really can grasp the desperation that Ahlblad and his men must have felt. The small grove in the island is the only place, from where one can try to find some cover. Otherwise there is only rocks in the island, without any cover from observation. Without a boat one also cannot get out from the island. Swimming in the open sea is completely out of the question.
- Landing to the island is a very demanding operation and it should not be attempted, unless the weather is good. There is two sturdy poles in the north-east shore, to which one can fasten the boat without an anchor for a brief visit. There is also a small lagoon in the north-west shore to which one drive with a small boat. The approach to the lagoon however when observed from the island, looks very reckless with a boat bigger than a rowing boat, so I would say that the north-east shore offers the only sensible landing place. - There is also some metal loops attached to the rock in the north-east shore, which can be used when anchoring. The waters around Morgonlandet are also very rocky, so it is wise to approach the island slowly and carefully. - There is really no structures in the island from the time of Hanko Front. All of the gun positions and other structures, which can be found from the island, have been build after the Russians had left from Hanko. However I have attached the pictures from those structures as a part of this presentation, as I think that they show how important place Morgonlandet was during the rental area of Hanko and after that. - If one is interested of the events in Morgonlandet, the island is definitely worth of visiting. The size of the island and the capture of the Morgonlandet observation team are such a small scale events, that it is easy to follow the events in the island. "Case" Morgonlandet 16.07.1941
