LAPPOHJA

|
- Lappohja is located in Hanko Cape. Distance from Tammisaari, which is
located in north-east from Lappohja is about 15 kilometers. The distance from
Lappohja to Hanko, which is located in south-west, is about 20 kilometers.
During 1941 Lappohja was the eastern point in the land front of the Hanko
Cape.
- The general layout of the front line has been drawn using the original maps, which show the Finnish and Russian positions in the area. The main source when drawing the Russian front line to the map, has been the map of the Russian rental area of Hanko, which was drawn by the Finnish in 1943. For drawing the Finnish front line to the map I have used the book by Åke Kretz: Frontvardag. Lieutenant Kretz was one of the Swedish volunteers, who formed the Swedish Volunteer Battalion (SFB). The Swedish Volunteer Battalion was responsible of defending one of the sections in the area of Lappohja. - There was no point of placing single structures to the map, as the map literally would be filled from single structures. The front line, which is now drawn to the map, shows the general layout of the line. However there has been depth in defence especially in the Russian side, so the front line has not been just a one single trench line in terrain, but there has been positions also in front of the front line, as well as behind of the line. - The dominating landscape features in the area are the sea in the east, the village of Lappohja and the swamp in west, which has limited effectively the shape of the Finnish front line. The Finnish front line, which is drawn to the map, show the situation on 08.07.1941. Straightening the front line, which was done during the night of 07.07. - 08.07.1941 in Lappohja, changed the general layout of the front line a bit by bringing the Finnish front line closer to the Russian line. The Russian front line in practice remained the same through out the existence of the Hanko rental area and its general layout didn't really change much. - It is quite hard to find the Russian front line from the area anymore. This is because in practice the Russian front line was located in the village of Lappohja. Lappohja itself has grown significantly since the war and building of new roads and structures has effectively destroyed the front line nearly completely. Some remains of course can be found, like parts of the massive anti-tank ditch, which starts from the area of Dragsvik and once went through the Hanko Cape, covering the Russian front line.
- Some remains from the Russian positions can be also found from the village of Lappohja, but these are barely visible. Additionally many of the remains are located in private yards, which makes it difficult to see or investigate them. However many of the foremost Russian positions can be found, especially from the area, which is opposite to the Front Museum. The foremost positions in practice are almost attached to the Finnish foremost positions. - The Russian front line in Lappohja and in the other areas has been a well defended solid line, which has included trenches, open and covered gun, light machine gun and machine gun nests. The front line has been additionally protected by the anti-tank ditch and with the barbed wire obstacles. Additionally the front line has been booby trapped, from which part of them however has been fake mine fields. Behind of the front line, there has been bases, which could have defended to every direction against an enemy, which might have gotten through the front line. - The best preserved area of the Finnish front line is the area of the Front Museum. If one starts to walk from the Front Museum towards Hanko, the Finnish foremost positions can be still easily seen. Additionally the trenches and dugout remains are in good shape. The Swedish volunteers eagerness to fortify their positions is well visible in the Front Museum area. The front line has been constantly moved towards the Russian front line, by digging more trenches and communication trenches. - If you cross the Hanko Cape Road and walk towards the Russian front line, you can find the Finnish foremost positions. Here and there are also the Russian foremost positions, which can be separated from the Finnish positions, by looking at to which direction the entrance and firing or observation opening has been aimed. - From the area of Lappohja only the area of the Front Museum can be recommended as a place to visit. From other parts, the front line is only barely identifiable and most often is located in private yards.
