HÄSTÖ & FURUHOLMEN

Hästö & Furuholmen

 - The island of Hästö is located about 15 kilometers south-west from Tammisaari. The distance to Hanko, which is located in west, is about 20 kilometers. The length of the island is about one kilometer and from the widest point the island is over 500 meters wide. The island of Furuholmen is closely connected to Hästö and only a narrow ditch separate these two islands.

- The dominating landscape features in Hästö and in Furuholmen are the tall and vast rocks. Especially the east side of the island of Hästö, is nearly solely a one big rock. Despite of the rocky terrain, forest has covered Hästö rather effectively. Especially the middle part of the island contains dense forests. Furuholmen on the other hand in nearly completely a rock island, where wooded areas can be found only from the south and south-east side of the island.

- There is a pier in the north side of the island of Hästö, which has several buoys, to fasten the boat. The use of the pier is free of charge, although it is desirable to leave some voluntary donation for the usage of the pier. Those who fasten their boat to the pier of Hästö, will notice the memorial for the Battle of Hästö greeting them. The memorial was erected in 1981.

Rocks of Skogby

- There is a huge number of war time structure remains in the island of Hästö and Furuholmen. Like the map shows, most of the structures are located in the north-east and east side of the island of Hästö. The location of the structures in the north-east and east side, reveals them to be a Russian build positions. All of the structures in this area, have been aimed towards the assumed attack direction of the Finnish troops. The nearest Finnish positions have been located in Skedö and in Elgö. The distance from Hästö to those places is a bit over one kilometer to north-east.

- The map of the Russian rental area of Hanko, which was drawn by the Finnish in 1943, shows that Russians had several light machine gun and machine gun nests in the north-east and east shore of Hästö. Additionally there has been at least one open position for an anti-tank gun. Also from other parts, the island of Hästö has been rather effectively fortified by the Russian troops. In Furuholmen there is only few structures.

- As the Russians were the last ones to build fortifications in the island of Hästö, it is rather difficult to shape out with full certainty, those structures which are mentioned in the Finnish battle report. There is a structure in the west side of Furuholmen, which perhaps is the position for the Finnish light machine gun, but at the same spot, there has been also an Russian position. Nearby is also an big dugout remains, which most likely is the accommodation dugout, build by the Finnish troops. The structure at least has not been marked as a Russian structure, to the map from 1943.

- The island of Hästö is a definitely a worth of visit. It is easy to land into the beautiful island and the journey from Tammisaari or from Sommarö doesn't take that long. When coming from the east towards west with a boat, Hästö is also located right next to the route before Hanko. There is not that many places, where one can get familiar to one of the battles from Continuation War in the actual battle location this easily.
