EXCERPT FROM THE FLIGHT LOG OF SQUADRON 6, PART I

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

4th of November 1941

- Observation and fire control flight: 4.11.1941. Time: 14:40 - 16:35.

- Mission: Lieutenant Euramo directed the fire with a second plane following him. Additionally two planes were covering them by flying close to the fire control planes. After ten minutes when Euramo had informed that he is ready for directing fire, the first two shots came. The mission was to bombard the docks in Hanko harbour. After the first shots a rather large adjustment was made and the next shots landed close to the northern most dock. New correction resulted a hit to the north dock, which resulted an explosion. Due to this, Euramo called for fast firing which resulted more hits to the north dock and to the area between of the north and south dock. Two fires erupted in the north dock. The next four shots could not be observed and when Euramo received a message that five enemy fighters had taken off from the airfield, he stopped directing fire for a brief moment. But as the enemy fighters did not appear and they were not seen anywhere, Euramo called for new shots to the same target. At this time one big war ship and four smaller ships were spotted in the north and south docks, which were starting to move towards the bay. Some of the ships remained stationary at the bay, while some circled around.

- The Harparskog memorial is a very simple one, but can be found easily as there is a clear signs to the memorial from the Hanko - Hyvinkää road.

- "At this place on 15th of December 1941, Field Marshal Mannerheim received the parade of the troops that fought in the Hanko Front"

- In the summer of 2006 the above shed appeared next to the memorial. There is a doubled sided information-board in the shed, which contains short biography of Mannerheim and short history of Winter and Continuation War. Very few lines are about the Hanko Front. Additionally there is a drawn map of the fortifications in the Hanko Cape. The map however is imperfect and even some of the concrete fortifications are missing from the map. Otherwise this is a very good idea and the shed looks great. I would like to see similar information-boards to be attached near to every single numbered structure. The information-board doesn't even need to be this big.
