FIRE POSITIONS

SECTION PUKKILA, PART I

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

October 1941 to December 1941

- At the end of the October 1941 the VMV-boats of Section Pukkila started to patrol the area between Jussarö and Osmussaar. Their aim was to disturb the naval traffic in and out of Hanko. This patrol activity continued to 27th of October. There were no significant events during this time. At the end of the November and beginning of December the enemy naval traffic was increased, as the Hanko was being evacuated. The gunboats of Hämeenmaa and Uusimaa from Section Pukkila and few VMV-boats managed to get a contact to an enemy convoy during the morning hours of 4th of December 1941 in the south side if Jussarö in the middle of Gulf of Finland.

Lieutenant Commander T. Peltola

Fire positions, Picture 1

- The most well preserved and visible fire position in the whole Harparskog area, can be found near of the bunker number 306. For some reason none of these concrete constructions, which can be found from the defensive line, are drawn to the various fortification maps.

Fire positions, Picture 2

- The same concrete fire positions as above. Old logs used to reinforce the position lies at the bottom of the ruin.

Fire positions, Picture 3

- Embrasure or observation hole or perhaps both.

Fire positions, Picture 4

- Old barrel stands on the edge of the position.

Fire positions, Picture 5

- Remains from a fire position near of the bunker number 305.

Fire positions, Picture 6

- The marks from the log reinforcements are very well visible in the concrete.

Fire positions, Picture 7

- Concrete pieces in the trench line near of the bunker number 307.

Fire positions, Picture 8

- Concrete remains near of the bunker number 303.

Fire positions, Picture 9

- A pit near of the Harparskog village, which is full of concrete pieces. Unfortunately the recent forestry in this part of the defensive line has done a bad job as most of the trenches are full of dead trees and branches and that also concerns this pit, as the concrete remains are only barely visible anymore.

Fire positions, Picture 10

- Metal sticking out from the concrete.

Fire positions, Picture 11

- The same pit seen from other direction, showing the few rather massive concrete pieces. It does look like that the concrete remains that were located in these various places, were blown to pieces for some reason.

Fire positions, Picture 12

- The biggest construction right in the trench line. Fortification maps remain silent about this construction, so you can only guess what has been located here. If you look at the edges of the construction, you can clearly see that it has been covered with stones. Interestingly also there is a massive concrete base.

Fire positions, Picture 13

- The same construction seen from other direction. The construction is connected to the trench line and it is located in the first defensive line. There is no more trenches in front of this construction.
