EXCERPT FROM THE FLIGHT LOG OF SQUADRON 6

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

2nd of July 1941

- Reconnaissance and ground attack flight: 2.7.1941. Time: 12:30 - 13:25.

- Observations: At 12:50 one motorboat spotted in the grid H 10981. The boat is anchored next to a small island near of a cliff. The bow is towards the sea. At the same time Staff Sergeant Salminen spotted Russian fighter plane type I-16 behind of our patrol. We continued flying along the coastal line towards west. Our altitude was about 300 meters. The enemy plane continued following us and firing from a range of 500 to 600 meters.

- At 12:53 to 12:55. There is no movement in the airfield. AA-gun fire coming from three points in the area of bath. The clouds from the explosion are gray. There are no tracers. The enemy fighter is still after us and keeps on firing short bursts from the range of 500 meters. In the eastern harbour there is six motor boats anchored. Two war ships anchored in the south side of the peninsula near of the old cemetery. These are most likely gunboats.

- At 13:10. There seems to be no flying boats in the harbour of Hangonkylä. The AA-gun battery located in the harbour opened fire against us.

- A big dugout remains, which is located in the backyard of a summer cottage. Like always it is a good thing to ask permission if the occupants are around or at least explain what you are doing there. The dugout remains has been kept in an excellent condition. Nearly no garbage inside the remains and it seems that the vegetation has been kept short also.
