GRÖNSKÄR

Grönskär

- The island of Grönskär is located north-east of Hanko. The distance from Grönskär to Hanko is about 8 kilometers. Distance from Tammisaari, which is located north-east from Grönskär is about 26 kilometers. The island of Grönskär is a very small island. The length of the island is only about 190 meters and from its widest point the island is a bit over 100 meters wide. The island is nearly identical in its shape and size, with the island of Furuskär, which is located in the south-east side of Grönskär. The distance between these two islands is only about 200 meters.

- The island is covered by a thick forest and the interiors of the island is not visible from the sea. There is no big elevation differences in the island. Of course the ground does rise a bit towards the inland from the shore line, but the elevation difference is nearly insignificant.

- The waters surrounding the island are very rocky and it advisable to approach the island calmly and only during a good weather. In no circumstances it is advisable to approach the island from the south, as the biggest shoals are in the south side of the island. It is better to go around Björnholm and approach the north-east and east shore of Grönskär. It is rather easy to anchor to the north-east and east shore of Grönskär. You can also just and just with a 35 meter long rope attach the boat to the shore. There is no summer cottages in the island, so one can investigate the island freely.

- There is really no structures from the war time in Grönskär. Of course some foxholes and remains from a fire positions can be found, but these are very small. The scarcity of the structures is explained by the fact, that the island has been way too small to keep a big forces there, which could have manned any bigger positions.

- Additionally the Russians have controlled the island of Horsön in west, from which the area of Grönskär could have been also controlled with fire. The Finns on the other hand didn't really need to occupy Grönskär, as they had forces in Björnholm, which is located in east. The distance between Björnholm and Grönskär is a very short one.

- The map of the Russian rental area of Hanko, which was drawn by the Finnish in 1943 doesn't also show any defensive structures in Grönskär. According to the map, the island has been completely booby-trapped with mines. No structures are shown in the map.

- If one is interested about the battles in the Hanko Front, it is worthwhile to visit the island, after one has gotten familiar with the battle. Otherwise Grönskär doesn't really offer anything else, for which it would be worthwhile to visit the island.
