FURUÖN

Furuön

- The island of Furuön is located in south-west from Tammisaari. Distance from Tammisaari to Furuön is about 28 kilometers and distance from Hanko, which is located south of Furuön, is about 8 kilometers. The length of the island is a bit less than 400 meters. From its most widest point, the island is only about 80 meters wide.

- Furuön is covered by a rather thick forest and only the shoreline is free from vegetation. The middle part of the island consist of rock. That area also contains a summer cottage, which divides the island in two parts, to the north-west area and to the south-east area. From these two areas, it is only possible to explore the north-west area. The south-east area is a very narrow and judging from the bulrushes, the sea has nearly covered the island there. Additionally the south-east area does not really offer suitable places for anchoring. The only suitable anchoring places are located too close to the summer cottage.

IV Platoon

- There really is just few structure remains in the island. Only one single structure remains can be found from the north-west area of the island. The area also holds some other structure remains, but these have disappeared from the landscape so totally, that it is not possible to photograph them anymore. Only a slight bump in the ground reveals the structures anymore. It is most likely, that the south-east area of the island offers only one or two structure remains, if even that.

- The scarcity of the structures is explained by the size of the island. Furuön has been way too little place, to station large number of troops. Gunnarsholm in east, Stackörn in south and Elmholm in west have offered a much better place to station large number of troops, than the tiny Furuön.

- Due to the fact that there is only few structures and because of the summer cottage, Furuön cannot be really recommended as a place to visit. Everything that there is to be seen, is presented in the one gallery of this presentation. If one is interested about the battle, one can get a good picture of the different events during the battle, by moving with a boat in the nearby waters without anchoring to the island.
