COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF'S ORDER OF THE DAY, N.O. 34,
PART III

(The glory of our days - Finnish war 1939 - 1940 with pictures and communiqué from headquarters)

14th of March 1940

- In spite of all bravery and spirit of sacrifice, the government has been compelled to conclude peace on severe terms, which however are explicable. Our army was small and its reserves and cadres inadequate. We were not prepared for a war with a Great Power. While our brave soldiers were defending our frontiers we had by insuperable efforts get what we lacked.

- We had to construct defensive lines where there were none. We had to try to obtain help, which failed to come. We had to find arms and equipment at a time when all the nations were feverishly arming against the storm, which now sweeps over the world. Your heroic deeds have aroused the admiration of the world, but after three and a half months of war we are still almost alone. We have not obtained more foreign help than two reinforced battalions equipped with artillery and aircraft to our fronts, where our own men, fighting day and night without the possibility of being relieved, have had to meet the attacks of ever fresh enemy formations, straining their physical and moral powers beyond all limits. When some day the history of this war is written, the whole world will learn of your efforts.

- Without the generous help in arms and equipment which Sweden and the western powers have given us, our struggle up to this date would have been inconceivable against the countless guns, tanks and aircrafts of the enemy.

- Unfortunately, the valuable promise of assistance which the western powers gave us, could not be carried out when our neighbours, concerned for their own safety, refused the right of transit for troops.

- Structure 600 which was suppose to be accommodation dugout capable of accommodating twenty men cannot be found from the area with a full certainty. However a natural depression in the rock which forms the usual shape of a dugout remains is located right next to the main road in the area.

- It however remains a question mark whether or not the picture shows the remains from the structure 600. The general shape of the pit would suit to the other dugout remains.

- View from the nearby cliffs. On the right side of the picture, is the Björkvik peninsula, where the structures 401, 402 and 420 are located. In the Vestervik area I finally realized why the Russians were so displeased to their rental area. From these cliffs, the Finnish troops had nearly no difficulties at all to observe what was going on in the Hanko Cape area, as the cape area is visible even with the naked eye. Use binoculars and other observation equipment and you have a rather poor naval base, which is under observation from the enemy constantly.
