EXCERPT FROM THE FLIGHT LOG OF SQUADRON 6

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

1st of December 1941

- Reconnaissance flight: 1.12.1941. Time: 10:40 - 11:45.

- Observations: At 10:55. A big transport ship is anchored in the east side of Russarö. Distance to the shore is about 600 meters. Displacement is about 5 000 to 6 000 tons. Next to the transport ship is one confirmed G-class destroyer. Distance to the transport ship is 300 meters. On the north side of Russarö island is another confirmed destroyer. Type is unknown. Third destroyer is anchored south-east of Tulliniemi. Distance to the shore is 700 meters. One Fugas class ship is anchored 500 meters to north-east from Tulliniemi. The harbour seems empty. There is also a fire in the harbour, from where black smoke is coming. Most likely an oil fire. Smoke is also rising from the area of Uddskatan storages. Several smaller smoke clouds are rising from the north side of the city. Black smoke is also rising from the island of Russarö. Heavy and accurate AA-gun fire is coming from Dödö. Our own AA-guns are firing from Porssö. The firing is light.

- The gun position can be found from the area fully ready.

- View to one of the two positions in the area.

- The same position seen from an opposite direction. The base for the gun is located in the middle part of the picture.

- View inside the position. The doorway is located in the left side of the picture.

45, a & b, Picture 5

- The original wooding still remain inside the ammunition storage.

45, a & b, Picture 6

- Nature has decorated the base of the gun.

45, a & b, Picture 7

- I think that the gun position is in an alarming state. The communication trenches have been buried under fallen trees and dead leaf. This gun position would be a very interesting looking, if the communication trenches would be cleared and the positions made more visible. If things continue like this, the positions will be buried even more underground.

- Depressions in the concrete.

45, a & b, Picture 9

- One of the two positions in the area. Like you can see in the background, a lot of trees have fallen in the area.

45, a & b, Picture 10

- Second position in the area, which is a bit better visible. Although a lot of soil has accumulated near the doorway, like you can see in the first picture of this gallery.

45, a & b, Picture 11

- There doesn't seem to be any real traces of damage in the cast itself.

45, a & b, Picture 12

- Entrance into the position. The iron bars, which are located in the wall, have been used to camouflage the positions.

45, a & b, Picture 13

- View towards Björnholmen. Hanko Cape can be seen also in the background, veiled into a fog.
