SUBMARINE IN THE SNALO SECTION

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

31st of July 1941

- On the night of 31st of July 1941 a boat patrol was moving in the sea around Björnholmen in a very unusual purpose. The patrol was searching a submarine, which Lieutenant Touri from Skogby with several witnesses had seen in between of Björnholmen and Vitsand. The submarine was not found from the area, but just in case the coastal pioneers under the command of Lieutenant Roosi cleared a channel from Järnö to Vitsand.

Corporal H. Hartella and Major L. Henriksson.

- Structure 245 cannot be found from the area to which it has been marked in the fortification map. Some single man shelters are in the area.

254, Picture 2

- Next to the road, which leads into the area, is a small dugout remains or a single man shelter.

254, Picture 3

- The same remains seen from another direction.

254, Picture 4

- Additionally there is either dugout remains or remains from an artillery position next to the main road in the area. There are two remains and the size of these is a huge one.

254, Picture 5

- Both of the remains are a damaged, because sand has been dug from the area and used most likely to improve the road. The shape of the structures however is still quite easy to see.

254, Picture 6

- The edge of the best preserved remains, which is covered by vegetation.

254, Picture 7

- From the second remains only a short section of the edge is visible anymore. Sand has been dug from the remains so much, that the whole structure is nearly completely destroyed.

254, Picture 8

- A short section of the edge is visible in the left side of the picture, but otherwise digging the sand has destroyed rest of the remains.
