EXCERPT FROM THE FLIGHT LOG OF RECONNAISSANCE AND BOMBER FLIGHT

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

4th of August 1941

- Reconnaissance flight: 4.8.1941. Time: 05:55 - 07:25.

- Observations: At 06:30 one Fugas-class minesweeper spotted in grid H 12580. The ship is stationary. Due to the low cloud cover observation was performed at an altitude of 50 meters. We were unable to observe the Paldiski area due to the bad visibility. No ships were spotted during 06:45 to 07:00, in the sea between of Hanko and Osmussaar. Observation was performed at an altitude of 50 meters.

- The tactical map symbol on the fortification map would indicate a accommodation bunker/dugout with a anti-tank shelter to the western area of Långstrand peninsula. This bunker/dugout would have been able to accommodate twenty men. However no such a construction can be found anymore from the area.

- There is two options to explain this. The first and most likely one is that during the past sixty years traces from this construction have been wiped out under the roads and summer cottages, which did not exist here in such a numbers before and during the war.

- Second explanation is, that the structure 246 was never constructed. However normally from the areas where different constructions were planned, some remains can be found even when those might differ a lot from the tactical map symbols. Also right next to the road, which goes in the western most area of Långstrand peninsula a very shallow and modest remains from a machine gun position can be found.

- However no traces from accommodation bunkers or dugouts remain.

246, Picture 2

- The only barely visible traces from Harparskog-line in this area. The structure is very difficult to shape out from the picture. The remains from the supposed machine gun position is located right in the middle of the picture. The fir grows in the middle of the position.

246, Picture 3

- The same remains from a different angle. The shoreline is located within few hundred of meters.
