COMMUNIQUÉ (HANKO) OF THE HEADQUARTERS 21.07.41

(Communiqué and reports of the Hanko Group units, T-16432/1742, Military Archives of Finland)

21st of July 1941

- The artillery action from both sides, has continued. Enemy artillery and mortars have been more active than before, during the night and day.

- One of the strangest structures in the whole Harparskog-line is this cellar, which without a doubt has served as a dugout during the war. This assumption is based to the fact that the trench line can still be seen going in front of the door of the cellar and there is also few notes about these kind of constructions used by the troops in the book Teasing the encirclement of Hanko. In the chapter idea is born, Molnár mentions that men in the frontline used to live in dugouts or in cellars. In the same chapter it is also mentioned that in Kamsholmen the command post was located in the local potato cellar, most likely a very similar structure that is seen here in these pictures. Of course this does not match to the map symbol, but there is few dugouts in the area, very close to this cellar/dugout, which are unfortunately buried under garbage.

242, Picture 2

- The cellar seen from a bit closer. The stone reinforcements are still visible opposite side of the door.

242, Picture 3

- The old concrete is starting to crack. Old bolt still remain in the wall, even when the door is not located at that spot anymore.

242, Picture 4

- This is one of the few surviving dugout remains in the area, which have not been covered with garbage. Located right next to the main road in the area, the distance to this is about 100 to 150 meters from the location, where 242 has been drawn to the map. That cellar/dugout combination is located also within 150 meters from the place where the map symbol would place the structure 242.

242, Picture 5

- Another dugout remains, which is also right next to the main road in the area.
