DIRECTING FIRE FROM KARENSHOLM, PART V

(Teasing the encirclement of Hanko, Adolf Molnár & History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

(If there is differences in the name of the places in 1941 and today, italic text inside the closures has been used to indicate the name of the place today)

24th of September 1941

- The gun barrels are now red-hot and Tuominen contacts the mortars again, which have rested for a while. Krogens (Krogars) is still on fire, but now the mortar fire is again directed to the direction of the dugout village.

- Again the grenades are fired from Kamsholmen until there is no more targets for the artillery or for the mortars. Tuominen gives an order to stop firing.

- Sundquist and Johnny start again doing their own tasks. Field glasses, compass and pencils are again usable items, as they start to make observations from the nearby areas. South from them, distance of about three kilometers is a long island. Its southern tip is only within a hundred meters from the mainland. If only that island is unoccupied.

- When night arrives, the three men head back to their positions. The day has been full of action and the Russian staff in Hanko has to make some changes to their provisions list…

- Dark entrance into the accommodation area.

218 & 456, Picture 2

- Second entrance in the accommodation area, which could have provided shelter for a 3/4 platoon. The number 456 is still nicely visible.

218 & 456, Picture 3

- Another entrance into the same bunker.

218 & 456, Picture 4

- Fresh air...

218 & 456, Picture 5

- Field of fire for the machine gun now grows with trees, bushes and grass. It is a hard one to spot from a distance.

218 & 456, Picture 6

- Near of the bunker is an observation position or a position for a machine gun. Either way, this is facing straight towards the front line, where the machine gun in the bunker could not reach.

218 & 456, Picture 7

- It's a deep fall from the roof, if you are not looking where you're going.

218 & 456, Picture 8

- Second entrance seen from the roof. The communication trench has been mined into the rock.

218 & 456, Picture 9

- The front wall of the machine gun embrasure.

218 & 456, Picture 10

- Notice anything interesting? I wonder where does the key in the upper corner of the picture fits?
