DIRECTING FIRE FROM KARENSHOLM, PART II

(Teasing the encirclement of Hanko, Adolf Molnár & History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

24th of September 1941

- More and more shells are landing to the Russian dugout village, sometimes some shot lands too short and a tall water whirl is raised above the sea level. Tuominen is directing the fire cold-bloodedly. To him those are not people, just targets for the artillery.

- There's a eighty meters long trench line connecting the Russian observation position to the command post and there in that trench line, lies a Russian officer who suspiciously observes the nearby islands. Does he know, that the three men can look directly into the Russian dugout village? No one knows for sure, but suddenly he turns his field glasses towards Karensholm. The men see him and lie even more low, trying to camouflage themselves into the bushes.

- Entrance into the bunker, with the door on the right leading to the actual embrasure.

- The door at the end of the corridor leads to another corridor from where you can access the observation cupola and the accommodation area.

215, Picture 4

- Entrance into the accommodation area has been strangely made quite cramped, by placing the air pump right to the doorway.

- Embrasure.

215, Picture 6

- Entrance to a fresh air.

215, Picture 7

- The same entrance as in the previous picture, seen from the outside. Moss has gently covered nearly everything.

215, Picture 8

- Embrasure from the outside. Here the camouflage of the front wall has been completed.

215, Picture 9

- General view of the area, with the embrasure in front of the picture and the observation cupola seen in the upper left corner.

215, Picture 10

- Observation cupola and the chimney flue.
