RECONNAISSANCE MISSION TO RÅGHOLM, PART II

(Teasing the encirclement of Hanko, Adolf Molnár & History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

4th of September 1941

- The island itself is in shambles. Trees are chopped to pieces, holes in the ground from grenades, burned trees. It's very hard to move in the island and sometimes we have to go around areas, which are in too bad shape to walk in. In this island the Russians and Finns have certainly showed their best, making firewood for the next ten years. Rågholmen was sometimes during the nights, occupied by the Russian troops, this was very visible from Kamsholm. Finally they pulled back completely from the island and their artillery fired the place, just to make it impossible for the Finnish troops to remain there. The Finnish artillery on the other hand fired the place, so that the Russian troops couldn't stay there.

- And so artillery batteries from both sides fired Rågholmen so long, that there is nothing left from the forest anymore.

- The structure seen from the entrance. It is remarkable how well the structure has retained its shape for over sixty years.
