PATROLLING IN THE SNALO SECTION, PART I

(History of the Hanko Group, T-22005, Military Archives of Finland)

25th of July 1941

- The patrolling didn’t enliven until after the Russians had made an attack against the eastern islands of Tammisaari archipelago and managed to capture the whole Hästö island group. On 25th of July Captain Valpasvuo from the 1st Coastal Battalion made an interesting diversion in the area of Hästö. The goal for the diversion was to lure the enemy to reveal its firing positions in the island of Hästö. The diversion was a success. An old motorboat was equipped with a wooden machine gun and two cardboard soldiers were mounted in the bow. Artificial boat driver was attached in the rear of the boat. Additionally real smoke shells were attached to the boat.

Corporal H. Hartella and Major L. Henriksson.

- Structure 197 according to the fortification map was a dressing station. The area contains a lot of old farmhouses, where the dressing station in question most likely operated. At least no structures build just for the dressing station can be found from the area.
